I’m going to give you three possibilities. The first is that you are the one who is going to lose. In an economic sense, we have a winner-take-all economy. We can’t have a situation where one person has a strong advantage over everyone else in terms of income, wealth, or political influence. When two people are going to lose together, we can’t continue down this road in our economy. The winner-take-all system is not just a bad thing; it’s a terrible thing. If you’ve ever run a casino, you know it. If you’re a gambler, if you’re anybody, this is a situation that’s not good for the overall economic health of America. It’s probably not the kind of society that should be operating. And so here today we are bringing this into the light.
Let me back up, briefly, and say to those of you who are listening today — I’m not a political science master. I am not a political scientist, so this is what I say. Suppose there’s a roulette wheel. This is something that all of you have probably seen on your television screens, or whatever. It’s a rotating wheel that moves a number of times. And it turns and spins again and again, and at every turn the wheel starts over. It starts at the beginning of this wheel. It starts at the very front of the wheel, or what I call the jackpot position. It keeps spinning. And at the beginning of every spin, it is a small number. It increases and increases until it is large. That is, the number of times that the wheel starts over increases. Every time, the wheel is on a straight line to the left or right around. If you have seen the TV show “Wheel of Fortune,” you’re going to know what I’m talking about. If not, here goes: The wheel changes every time to the right or left. What it means is that every time the wheel changes, there are lots of outcomes, which means that if you are going to win, you are going to win big. If you lose, you’re going to lose big. And as soon as a number gets close to a certain number, the wheel shifts over to the other side so it starts from a new perspective. In a way, that’s like the roulette wheel. It’s an economic game with multiple outcomes. For example, each time you go to play the lottery, you want a number between 3 and 11, right?
