In the fall of 2014, we started seeing rumors of a Nintendo Switch launch date. The news quickly became a reality, and it was announced in the video above. After nearly a year of waiting, we get to play and review it in our full review. There wasn’t a lot to really talk about, aside from a new game, but there were plenty of gameplay clips, and some really interesting details. So be sure to check them out!
Now to talk about what made this new console special. The Nintendo Switch comes in two versions: a console that runs on a battery, and a handheld, and the Switch portable.
Console
The Nintendo Switch runs on a modified version of the original Switch that runs on a “slim” chip. This chip has two ARM Cortex-A57 cores, an ARM Cortex-A73, 1MB of L1 & L2 cache, and 2MB SDRAM. The main advantage to running on a modified Switch compared to the original is it can be plugged into an HDMI port, eliminating the need for an adapter. While most portable systems offer two HDMI ports, this Nintendo Switch only has one (it’s the right side controller button). While the original is the portable version for Switch owners, Nintendo will also release the “portable” one this year for those who want to play games and movies on the go. The Nintendo Switch Portable will be available this spring.
The only other significant addition to this controller is support for the 3DS XL, which will be in line with the 3DS from last years. Not only will the controller match the XL, but it will also include more features like “motion controls”, which will let people use their hands as a joystick or analog stick. The Nintendo Switch portable itself won’t have the motion sensing feature, but users will be able to get other motion options, including support for Joy-Con controllers, which can be swapped out for the system’s two Joy-Con controllers. The portable will also have motion-sensing capabilities.
Switch
While the Switch controller has plenty of buttons, the device is also quite light. To change the controller and the console, players can turn on the Nintendo Switch, turn off the wireless connection, and place it back in its case.
