As we reported in August 2016 , Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort faced charges relating to the alleged laundering of money from Ukrainian billionaire and pro-Russian politician Victor Pinchuk.
The Justice Department alleges that at least $12 million in undisclosed payments, from offshore bank accounts in Cyprus to Pinchuk’s party, violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1978.
Manafort’s role in the investigation was first disclosed in the New York Post on October 23, 2016, and then in a lengthy, six-part CNN report on August 25.
The Wall Street Journal published a similar report on August 24 of that same year.
On August 30, the Post reported on an ongoing federal investigation into Manafort’s dealings with Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, and Georgia. There is also evidence of illegal campaign and lobbying work in Poland that has not yet been resolved.
“They had to pay him money in a country to which he was not a citizen so he couldn’t tell them how they were spending it,” a U.S. official familiar with the inquiry told the Post.

Meanwhile, the New York Times reported on October 28, that Manafort was being investigated by federal prosecutors in New York, Virginia, and Virginia Beach for “serious financial crimes” connected to his work with the pro-Russian political party.
Manafort, who denies wrongdoing in the scandal, was not the subject of any investigation by the FBI at that time.
