This depends on your level of learning, what you’re trying to play, what time of year you play, and many other details, but for the most part, you should buy one with a “flat” bore. If the price is right, I know that I’ve had all the good high end models in the budget range for years, and then found some good, cheap ukulele sets at a great price, and the other good ones I discovered are far from “value friendly” to those that can’t make a choice.
I recommend using a cheap e-bass, as it will fit in most budget bass guitars you can find, if the bore is shallow enough to have a decent tone without harshness; but for those looking to get more midrange out of their bass instrument, or just to add a little mid range and make it sound more musical, then a mid-budget ukulele will do it.
A good ukulele will also play well on its own, and most will pair very well with a ukulele amp, so you don’t have to use the amp if you don’t want to. I use a Marshall JTM800, so I can just plug it in, and start playing.
But if you don’t feel confident in your bass or ukulele, or in wanting to add a little bit of volume and midrange to your guitar-playing, or if you want to make it more comfortable to play on the lap, then go for the good quality bass; but remember, “good quality” can just mean that the bass strings, bridge position, tuner, and body are made quality, not just in the factory. Good ukulele strings come in different gauges, but that is probably the biggest “no-brainer” in choosing an instrument for you.
If I am using what I already own, and don’t want to add anything to that, can these ukuleles be played?
Absolutely. This is one of the reasons I’m writing this page, as not a single one of the basses I have is ever used as my primary ukulele. I use it as a backup ukulele just as I do with my guitars, and I can play it pretty much every day of the week, if I’m not going to be at work, or have family matters to attend to for a while. Any of your older guitars (or basses) would do
