The ukulele doesn’t produce a large amount of sound, so pick making is just unnecessary – and you want to pick clean as much as possible. A good method for picking clean is with the pick that you already have in your bag. A very common technique for pick cleaning is to use the pick that you already have in your bag and pull up the strings very lightly before removing it from the pick, but you need to remove the pick very lightly as it can irritate the strings if it sticks out too much (this is especially true if you pick your uke for the first time). Sometimes I use a pick with the pick head a little bit lower than the body of the uke, but to be safe, that is probably not an ideal or safe approach, though if it is you have to be careful as it can be used to pick strings with a much larger surface area than just the neck.
Can I use my pick to play the melody line in a melody, chord or progression?
Unfortunately, no, not by a long shot.
You can use your ukulele pick to play the melody line in chords and melodies, though not to play notes in a progression. I think that the majority of ukulele players think that the “melody lines” is more useful and useful to have.
One thing to remember, though – it’s not easy to move the bass strings up or down in a melody line on a uke. If you are trying to play a melody line with a ukulele as part of a melody, then the fretting to the left and right of the fretboard will move up or down in the melody line (in the same manner as the fretting to the left and right of the chord or melody fretboard do). So if that fretting pattern starts to feel a little difficult to play on the ukulele (for instance, when it’s being very picky about keeping the bass strings flat) then you definitely don’t want to skip the fretting there. If you’re unsure where the bass strings might be, then just remember that the ukulele can be a bit picky about keeping all its strings flat (this is one of the reasons why it’s generally not a good idea to play a bass guitar on the ukulele, and one of the reasons why many guitar players won’t be comfortable learning this guitar style on a ukulele).
