A: I pick up the fretboard by strumming my fingers around and pressing down against the fret.
Q: How do you play a bass?
A: I bend my strings down to play one note. Then I make sure that I’m strumming the strings in the right way, then I hold down the notes. You’re playing by pressing a whole note down with your hands.
Q: What is the difference between an electric and a nylon-stringed instrument?
A: Nylon strings are more delicate and take longer to develop in your playing. In electric basses you can play fast and make big sounds while your string is in their natural growth.
Q: Is there a difference in how to get a uke from uke-to-theatre (ie a real bass) versus from the theatre to the real bass?
A: Electric basses are more versatile. There’s more flexibility. I can play with other people, but I can also pick up some of the songs.
Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of uking in the theatres versus in the house?
A: It could be the best thing ever that you’ve done with your life. A lot of people have to make a decision where to move on to where to spend more time. I’m not one to make plans for the future. I just let the opportunity present itself and go with the flow in that moment.
Q: When did you first start playing electric bass?
A: I started in my teens.
Q: How do you perform your new songs?
A: In the theatre I play with guitar and drums and I sing too through the audience. In the house I don’t sing like that. I’ll stand in the back, but mostly I’ll take a small vocal instrument and string it up and do the solo song, then turn around and do the guitar part, sing or read from a book and put my fingers on the strings and give it a go.
Q: What is the biggest disadvantage of uking in the house versus performing live?
