Nails can be too long to play ukulele (which is why I play them with short nails). If you don’t want to cut your nails, this is your answer. So, here is what you need if you don’t want to play the instrument:
A wooden dowel or a ball
A bowl that you can roll on the floor or a small pot that you can place the ukulele on
How to Make the Ukulele String
Here is the process that you need to follow to make an ukulele string:
Step 1. Remove the wood dowel or ball from the top of the ukulele bowl or pot.
Step 2. Attach a wooden dowel or ball to the bottom of your bowl or pot and roll it on the floor. You can start with 2 wooden dowels or balls and work your way up.
Step 3. Attach a second wooden dowel or ball to the lower part of the ukulele bowl or pot. This will add stability to the ukulele.
Step 4. Attach a second wooden dowel or ball to the upper part of the ukulele bowl or pot. The dowel or ball you attach to the upper part of the bowls or pots will make the ukulele easier to move.
If you want to start playing now, you don’t need to do the process before you attach your new wooden dowel or ball. But the process shouldn’t be too difficult because the dowel or ball will be attached after you roll the ukulele on the floor or in a pot. Also it is good to practice on a flat surface before you start playing.
It is a good idea to practice with a ukulele in your hand first, before you play with the wooden dowels or balls. If you don’t play with a ukulele in your hands, it is a good idea to use a soft, smooth surface to play the next piece of string.
Once you get the ukulele down and started playing it, you can always adjust the length of the ukulele in order to get an idea of how to play it with the more long nails or short nails. So, start playing now and don’t worry too much about the length of the ukulele strings!
