When it comes to learning the ukulele, there is one thing that everyone should be prepared for. If you don’t know how to play an instrument in your life, there is probably no chance that you will ever learn to play one.
“I would say, if you’re at all unsure, don’t do it. Try to play it for the first time when you are 20. If you have a friend who might be interested in letting you try this thing out, go for it.” says Joe.
You can learn to play the ukulele by yourself. But if you want to build on that learning experience and make it your permanent passion, you will need to visit a teacher.
What do a teacher do with students like Joe? Does Joe have a specific teacher to start with?
The first teacher a beginner should check out in his/her journey to getting to grips with the ukulele is the teacher of his/her choice. “I have always been interested in ukulele playing for the right reasons and for me, it was the way of a true musician.” says Joe who is very fortunate in that he got to join the Music Conservatory of Wales where he has been ever since. He doesn’t feel that he needs to have a specific teacher to get started.
“I have just found it is really easy to play any instrument and I am learning it at the same time. It may take longer to learn the ukulele so your teachers may teach you longer but it is possible. It’s probably more important to learn something at the same time as a different instrument. So my choice is to just try and study everything together and then start going out and play.” He adds.
How often should you study? It seems as though you would never need to study more than twice a year.
“Don’t be embarrassed if you don’t study for the first couple of months. If you are determined, you will find that it becomes second nature.” says Joe. In his opinion, this is good news.
There is a huge amount of different parts to learn the ukulele, there are so many different notes it can be difficult to pick these up and it can be difficult to memorize them all.
