The Detroit Pistons will have more than double the salary for 2017-18.
The Pistons will be spending $85 million toward the salary cap in 2017, per over the cap data from BasketballInsiders.com and NBA.com. Detroit’s full 2017-18 salary cap projection is $89M. That makes the Pistons the 13th NBA team to spend more than $88 million in 2017-18.
The Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers round out the top four teams, as they each spent $89 million on their total salaries.
This increase to $85 million has been somewhat expected. The Pacers and Kings both took significant steps last summer to increase their payrolls.
With Paul George and Paul Millsap joining George Hill in free agency, the Pacers’ salary structure has been changed in a big way. According to over the cap data, Indiana will be spending just under $70 million on their cap space. The cap for the 2017-18 season is projected to be just north of $101M.
Brooklyn’s move to the cap was done in anticipation of the potential influx of cap space that’s coming to Brooklyn in the offseason that will make it hard to keep one of the marquee free agents in Brooklyn. The Nets will have more than double the cap space for 2017-18, as they will need to add over $12 million.
Sacramento Kings head coach Keith Smart was known to have an affinity for the Detroit Pistons and their players’ ability to shoot and defend.
Smart will be on his way out of Sacramento along with most of the entire roster during free agency this summer.
According to over the cap data, the Pistons will not be as heavily impacted by the departure of the coach and his staff. However, Smart, along with his staff, will have an easy time finding other contracts for their roster.
