Don’t sell a beat until you learn what it will take for it to work, and where to make money from it. For instance, if you’re selling a beat that you make in your bedroom (it’s really hard to make a living with that), and people are paying $8-10 for a remix of a track you make by clicking a button on a computer screen (a lot of people will pay $100 for a beat without even hearing it) you won’t be able to capitalize on the popularity of that track if you put the same price on it.
I’ve sold a few beats that way.
It’s definitely not worth it right now.
But eventually you could be able to sell songs that will make you a million dollars once it’s done.
Why should I write a song?
It’s important to know what you want to make, so that you can focus on your music, not your lyrics.
Here are some suggestions for writing a song:
Go to a church or synagogue. Find out what people feel like singing and singing what they like on the radio. See what makes them laugh. Listen to songs you like, but never buy the music.
I think all this comes from a common belief in my brain:
“I can write whatever I want to, and I’ll be rewarded for it.”
I’m not saying that. As mentioned previously, no matter how good a writer you are, this isn’t real writing. The person you write the song for will not like what you wrote. If you’re writing a song for the sole purpose of having a catchy song, please stop, and make something much better. You don’t want the songs to be catchy, you just want them to entertain.
Also, while we’re on the subject of entertainment, I don’t know what it’s like to “eat a slice of cake” with your words, but please don’t assume that the song you are creating for yourself will be a “slice of cake”.
I’m not sure what people want out of my music.
Everyone, even non-musicians, is looking for a melody and a beat and maybe a little melody or beat in there.
I need to make money to be able to pay the bills.
