Absolutely! You can easily learn to play guitar in 3 months from the first day you’re able to grasp and control a few notes, let alone the major chord changes in a tune.
You can read as much about it as you like, as long as you keep the key of chord changes constant throughout!
There is such a thing as too much detail. Do you find yourself trying to cram every note and chord you can think of in the beginning?
Sure! As you progress, you’ll find that you tend to get more focused with your own learning. You’ll start to focus on making certain skills second nature and focusing on your own understanding alone. You may even start to notice that your understanding starts to improve naturally.
If you have trouble working this stuff out, don’t worry! At this stage, any of your existing learning will have taken you far enough to where you can start applying it to the guitar. However, it’s worth taking some time to find that happy equilibrium again. I tend to practice three to four hours a day for three to four days a week.
How long does it take you to learn a new chord change?
Most new guitar players are surprised by how fast they eventually learn. It can be intimidating at first, but in my experience, when you’re starting out, you’re really struggling with the details. The easiest thing to help you along, is to try playing some scales first. If you can get to the “I” interval, you’re almost there. The more you practice, the quicker you learn to play any given scale.
What can I expect to progress into playing?
In fact, that’s the fun bit! You’ll soon find yourself playing many different scales at once.
Try to practice the most common guitar scales at least once a day. At first, you can be a bit intimidated by the sheer enormity of scales. Try to try things on your own, as soon as you get the hang of it (even if it’s only one note) – it might take some practice to get used to that scale and learn to play it by ear.
But once you get the hang of it, practice lots of scales (in that order) and you’ll be amazed by your own progress. You’ll come to realise that even in 3 weeks you can play all the scales you can think of and are able to use them in the same way.
