A new study estimates the number of Americans with no health insurance at 20 million.
The study by the Urban Institute and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, published Tuesday, finds that the uninsured rate rose to 27.2 percent—the highest level ever recorded—in 2011, with about 15 percent of adult Americans unable to get coverage because of a pre-existing condition, or they simply couldn’t afford to pay for it.
“The uninsured rate has risen sharply over the last several years, rising from 12.3 percent in 2010 to 13.5 percent in 2011,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention writes. “It reached its highest point for this segment of adults (27.2 percent) in October 2009.”
The findings contradict a recent Wall Street Journal editorial entitled “Can America Unwind from Obamacare?,” which posits an optimistic future if the Senate can re-create a viable bipartisan health care bill. “The uninsured are likely to become a smaller share of people in the future,” the editorial reads.
For his part, Sen. Ben Sasse told the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday, that there will be a “significant challenge” to enacting the overhaul of the tax code that Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi have pushed for. But, he added, Obamacare will be “deader than a doornail” within a few years if Republican politicians are not willing to repeal it before a final bill arrives.
Sasse argued that the current health care debate is “not about ‘do as I say, not as I do, but what’s in my heart,'” because a comprehensive health care reform bill in the Senate would be a “major achievement.”
