In order to earn a business grant, your company or organization must meet or exceed five of the following criteria:
Provide to The New York Times a total of $25,000 or more in revenue during the first three quarters of the calendar year in which it makes a business investment.
Provide to The New York Times a minimum of 30 full-time employees in three consecutive quarters of the calendar year in which it makes a business investment.
Provide to The New York Times an average turnover rate of at least 4% a year for three consecutive years.
Provide to The New York Times the equivalent of a five-figure tax refund per year.
When does a business grant expire?
You must make the application before the end of April.
Why is money returned to the foundation?
In 2014, after years of reviewing application submissions, the foundation determined, based not on individual requests, that only approximately 2 out of 7 would be able to meet the eligibility requirements. Based on the final list, the foundation announced the decision to return $8.6 million through a grant from its endowment, which it called a “significant investment.”
If I make donations to the journalism fund, will I still have a business grant that qualifies me for a business grant?
Yes—the foundation will grant a business grant to individuals and groups who donate to the journalism fund.
I donated a $6,000 investment to The New York Times Foundation in 2014; however, I must decide whether to accept a business grant and receive a business grant of $6,000 from the foundation this year. If I choose to take a business grant, I will have to wait until the foundation’s last business grant deadline in 2018. Should I accept a business grant? Should I withdraw my $6,000 investment? Is there any good argument for not accepting a business grant?
If the answer to both of these questions is “yes,” then this may be a more compelling reason to take a business grant than if the answer is “no.” But, to be clear, if neither of these questions is true (or “no”), you probably will not be able to apply for a business grant.
I have a $25,000 investment in the journalism fund; however, I can accept a business grant of just $25,000 because I qualify for a business grant under The New York Times Foundation’s criteria for receiving a business grant. Can I receive two grants under
