The European Union is asking Canada for assistance to set up a border monitoring centre after it was revealed that the Canadian government was monitoring online material for potential terrorist threats.
The U.K.’s Guardian newspaper reports that the European Union is asking Canada to set up a “watch list” of sites where “people suspected of terrorist activity such as terrorists or extremists are actively seeking online” in support of the security services.
“It can be an effective tool to protect the population against terrorist attacks,” the EU’s spokesman for security policy, Günter Wallenberg, told the newspaper.
Wallenberg said that “EU Member States have made access to information about the Internet available to their own police forces for a long time, but this was not done when the law came into effect.
“When the law took effect in the spring, the law-enforcement authorities started monitoring the Internet for new indicators of terrorist activities. They are currently actively monitoring the Internet for information on possible activities of people or organizations suspected of terrorist activities. This is the first time that this type of monitoring was applied,” Wallenberg added.
