The results published in the journal “Fertility and Sterility” suggest that the supplement industry is using genetic testing to influence a growing trend of “natural” products that promise to improve and even prolong your life.
Dr. Arik Arad from TAU’s Sackler School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Health Policy and Management said: “These studies are the first to quantify the number of mutations that are causing the problem of aging, and also to show the degree to which mutations contribute to the health problems in older people. Using this data we can better understand the genetic make-up of the population at large and improve our ability to develop and deliver high-quality natural products with the best possible results in the near future.”
For the study, Arad and his colleagues recruited participants from the population registry at the University of Liverpool and collected DNA samples from over 3,000 volunteers using a specially designed, disposable laboratory pipette, all of whom had donated the DNA from their mother and father as adults. In addition to this, the same genetic material was also used from participants from the UK population register. All participants underwent a genetic test and gave informed consent to participate in the study.
