“The answer is: red,” says Gary Wilson, who runs an auction-style lotteries in San Rafael and is one of the country’s top roulette-makers.
The highest denomination in the slot machine are $750,000, with $300,000 being the highest value.
In an attempt to crack the code, Wilson has developed a software program for the machines. It’s made in partnership with the National Association of State Machine Dealers and uses the “white noise” algorithm.
A machine’s winnings would be recorded as one of those white noise lines in the table, and if it came up red, the player would be charged a percentage of the jackpot in his pocket in the form of an entry fee.
If the machine makes multiple reds, it gets flagged with orange paint. This is the reason one machine won $100,000. The players were betting that the machine made as many as four reds on that day.
Mostly, it’s a matter of taking the guesswork out of gambling.
“It takes away all the guesswork,” Wilson says. “It’s much easier to figure out if something is going to happen the way you’d like to. And we’ll have the machine and a ticket ready for you to pick out, even if you’re an amateur gambler.”
The next thing you know, you’re at the table, staring at the numbers on the jackpot screen with the hope that you can guess the winning numbers just right.
