A healthy weight is what your body was designed to carry – it is the minimum you need to look ‘normal’. While the idea of being obese is shocking, this is not the ‘normal’ weight.

‘It’s very rare for a person to go beyond that weight,’ says Dr John O’Shea , a senior lecturer and obesity expert at the University of

‘The average person will have a body mass index (BMI) of 25-29 when they reach a ‘healthy weight’ – which is what the government has recommended in this country for women and 20kg for men.

‘If you want to lose weight, then you need to be at a lower level of BMI than that. If you have a BMI in the range of 25 to 29, then you will look like you’re having a crisis of confidence.’

If that’s what you have, weight loss won’t be possible, experts say.

‘You should aim for the lowest amount of weight you can – ideally around 10 per cent to 18 per cent of the person’s body mass,’ says Dr O’Shea.

If you have a BMI between 30-34, the government recommends your BMI should be below 2 and be as low as possible. You can also aim to lose weight by eating fewer calories.

And if you’re obese, your BMI in this range should be between 35-39.

The latest NHS figures show that there are 636,000 obese adults in Scotland, making it the second most obese country in Europe, behind Sweden.

There are a total of 1.5million obese children in Scotland who could become obese adults in their lifetime. That’s more than two Scots each week.

So, if you’re currently a healthy weight and want to ‘cut this excess fat off’, what do you need to do?

‘There are things you can do, and things you shouldn’t do, to make people lose weight more quickly,’ says Dr O’Shea.

‘These are generally simple things people can do without thinking about it,’ he says.

1) Don’t eat too many calories to lose weight. The more calories you eat, the longer you’ll have to wait for them to leave your body. This could cause a vicious cycle which means you’ll regain these calories the longer you don’t lose weight.
