This year, women will not be allowed to compete at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, the host nation, when there are “legal disagreements” about the eligibility of certain athletes, the International Olympic Committee said Wednesday.
An IOC statement said that “legal decisions made this year concerning the eligibility of women’s teams and athletes, which will be discussed by the Board of Governors in July 2015, will only lead to less competitive games and less opportunities for Olympic and world record holders, athletes and their federations.”
A statement from the United States Olympic Committee went further, saying, “The only way we can achieve a high level of opportunity for women is to change the system. We believe that any compromise of the system has the potential to result in less opportunities for athletes and better outcomes for our sport.”
Women across the globe, including the United States — which had 17 male-athletes on its Olympic roster — were disappointed by the ruling by the IOC. A statement from the U.S. Olympic Committee, in fact, warned that the decision would damage U.S. women’s sports “and make it harder for women in the long run.”
“They have to be more proactive,” Simone Biles, who was born into a family of Olympic medalists in the early days of American gymnastics, told Business Insider in September. “If women can’t compete in these events, they do not have the same motivation.
