Not really, those are typically two instruments that play the same notes, but are not exactly the same.
As a rule of thumb, a concert ukulele sounds a bit like your standard kazoo or kazoo kazoo. The string is longer, and is actually made up of strings, so the instrument is not as simple as a kazoo. The main difference is that the strings sound more “heavy.” It’s a hard sound and a high-pitched sound which may not match the sound of a soprano ukulele.
The instrument that I would typically compare these to is that of a soprano kazoo.
Other than that, the differences are minimal. The strings are actually one string together. The tuning is different, as well.
What kind of instrument should I get?
To put it simply, you won’t find all that many instruments in Japan, especially if you are seeking classical music!
The main reason for this is that classical music is not common to Japan. There are only a few great composers who were born in the country, and they did not play in Japan from their very first lessons. The music they composed were all written abroad, and were only available to foreigners during the Edo Period (1600-1868).
While the classical music is there, it’s not in much demand. The Japanese classical music is just a few times a week during the week, not like there is an entire weekend here dedicated to it. In Japan, music is very popular and played for an entire hour or two at a time during the school day.
That doesn’t mean that the instruments are not interesting or that one can’t have a good time; however, they are not the kind of instruments that are in demand.
This is probably why that is where a lot of people opt for the soprano ukulele.
Another reason is that the soprano ukulele is one instrument which is often overlooked and has almost no cultural history. This can be a good thing, though, because it can give a young guy a great introduction to music when it wasn’t all that popular in the 50’s and 60’s.
Is this a bad thing?
In some respects, it is. However, in the grand scheme of things, there is no reason why the instrument should not be enjoyed and appreciated.
