Uke chords can all be formed with finger picking. Simply reach across and grab the note to your left hand (or wherever is most commonly used with your fingers). This creates what is known as a thumb up or “finger picking” pattern.
Here is a simple finger picking pattern with chords in your head:
Here is an example of the thumb up pattern playing the major pentatonic over a 5 / 5.
The key differences to making this easier are two-fold. First, you will be picking the string on your hand so the whole fretboard will be the hand you are playing. This helps prevent unnecessary finger bending on your right hand or left hand, as well as helps you keep your right arm at a neutral position to the keyboard.
Also, note how the thumb above the notes and the upper arm of the keyboard will line up. The thumb is on the higher string and the fingers are playing on the lower string and the left hand.
A lot of people just look at the thumb up pattern. Why would you ever use this pattern?
There are two reasons:
You have been playing around the house and you are in the middle of a chord, and your right hand is trying to get an arpeggio to move across to the fretboard. When this happens, your thumb will often reach for the string, causing the chord to shift and be over a string that is not where you’re supposed to be playing.
Also, you may find yourself playing the chord on a tune or scale that requires arpeggios, so your thumb will often be over the finger playing the arpeggio.
Here’s another important note: if you aren’t very athletic, you may have difficulty moving your right hand to get the arpeggio to move across. If you can’t move your right hand, and your arms are heavy, you may want to check out a band’s playing technique course to learn the hand alignment and other drills that can help you get over this difficulty.
