Michele Nachfolger, an expert in social justice and author of Gender and Power: A Feminist Theory of Social Structure, explains in an interview with Salon that the term is used for anyone who has the courage to push for gender equality without a fear of backlash or rejection. And since it was invented in the early 1970s — and first used in the 1970s — there has actually been a lot of progress toward it in the United States and around the world.

“I am a strong believer,” Nachfolger says, “that there is no single social group that will never be oppressed because of its gender. There can be a group of women who have lived under oppression, who have been forced to flee their homes, who have been forced to be invisible to their communities, who have felt so threatened that they just don’t know when to give up and turn their backs on any social group.”

How did this particular concept of gender become so powerful, in 2017, just a few decades after its use in a U.S. court case, at the height of the Vietnam War? Nachfolger says this development is all the result of the cultural change that came with the 1980s and 90s, when women in particular started to find themselves more respected as a group and more in the public eye as a whole.

“In the early 1980s when we were at a very low point of women’s rights,” she says, “and with the sexual revolution and feminist and feminist-oriented activism, you started to see much more attention to women as a collective as opposed to just women in their individual lives.”

“And it’s not just about that, but you also got this more holistic recognition that women are, or are going to be, part of every group of people in the world, that it is the duty of every single progressive person that you will serve. We’re going to work on the right issues, the issues for women, the issues for ethnicities, the issues for people who don’t identify with your particular group. And that’s a very important piece to realize in a time of change.”
