No idea. What’s the first rap song where your name comes up? Probably ‘Crazy in Love’ by Nelly Furtado (yeah he’s a big name), it was one of my first records back in the early ’80s that I did on a shoestring budget.
Do you still listen to rap? Yeah, sometimes.
You have the lyrics to ‘Wake Up’ on the walls, right?
Yeah.
What was your favorite ‘Wake Up’ memory? (Not the lyrics, but the first time you ever heard it?)
Probably my first listen was at 6 in the morning, listening to it without my kids in the backseat. It was like this big, dark and quiet space, I could hear this very calm, melodic, bass, the first time I heard it, I heard it like, “Yeah, I got this, don’t give up.”
Who was your favorite rapper growing up?
Well, I don’t think that question has ever been answered. I love all of them. I have a lot about them already. There’s a ton of artists I love. I know that. I love Drake! I love 50 Cent. I love that guy. I love Kendrick Lamar. These are all guys that I grew up with.
The “Gone” video was filmed with an iPhone.
Yeah, a little iPhone 4c. But it was my first time using YouTube at the time. I used to go to YouTube and just go, “This music is so hard to find,” or “I hear this but I can’t remember where I heard it.” For me, that is how we started recording the video, so I had a lot of stuff I was able to do with that iPhone.
Is there anything you want to tell fans about the video?
There’s a lot we’re going to be able to do with the video with all the new technologies that are in place today. And the technology we’re in the position to use to shoot the videos is really interesting. A lot of these people are really just doing the same thing: They’re like, “Well, let’s do a video of what I was doing,” but then they actually are able to turn around and make an entirely new video that is entirely different and entirely different and totally different. So with those two things, we’re able to create things that are like that and be able to turn it into
