(CNN) President Donald Trump’s new executive orders will be enacted within the first 100 days of his presidency, the White House said.
“The President has been very clear that he wanted to take swift action to protect the American people and to help create new jobs and stronger border security — and tonight’s action is a step toward fulfilling that promise,” spokesman Sean Spicer said in a statement Monday.
“The President has been clear about his intention to repeal the health care and tax burdensome regulations placed on American businesses by Obamacare. As we have made clear, this action will bring back American jobs and bring health care costs under control.”
Trump, who had promised to put the order “on order” with “a very short period of time,” signed the orders into law earlier Monday. The first one — which would make permanent his ban on travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries — is set to implement Jan. 23. The second, which would eliminate the regulatory burden on small businesses, is set to take effect in four weeks.
A draft of the first order said: “This order restores the safety of the American people and the American economy, and seeks to keep existing lawful status for foreign nationals already lawfully present in the US.”
“This order reaffirms the policy of the administration, which is to exclude countries from our travel program, unless there are exceptional circumstances that support a broader review that considers the security vulnerabilities presented by the country in question,” the draft also said, according to CNN’s report.
