According to the World Bank, the top countries that offer carpentry degrees offer good salaries: Singapore with a salary of C$12,000 per month, the United States and Switzerland at C$23,000 and C$16,250 respectively.

In China: There is a problem: The cost of living across the country is not high enough or cheap enough for people to pursue carpentry full time. Many people live and work illegally — or part-time — from time to time. In order to avoid this, the profession tends to gravitate towards one part of China, such as Sichuan, Heilongjiang and other smaller provinces.

Where do we look after our carpentry? “Many people choose to focus on doing carpentry as a part-time job. The most common way of paying for carpentry is selling items via online marketplace — such as carpentry supplies, metal tools, carpentry machine and more. I can also offer my carpentry to non-profit organisations,” she says. To date, she has also made a living through a part-time job in the private sector as a consultant. “The majority of people tend to get their start in carpentry as a part-time job. A lot of the work I do is from home,” she adds.

But her main aim when starting out as a carpentry apprentice? Make a living, in that order. “When I first started out, I had no idea how long a period of time it would take to become a fully qualified and paid-for professional carpentry consultant.

“Once someone had my attention, I was more than happy to work for them to complete their own projects. I know the amount of time and money it takes to get to the top of the industry; it only took me four years to attain that level,” Sohin says.

The other key lesson from this experience? If you know how to do something, don’t be afraid to teach it to others. This can lead to a huge savings in labour costs and allow you to focus on your own projects instead of others’.
