The following interview was conducted between Janie and Dr. Demento. Both were extremely helpful and gave some great insight. In this interview, Dr. Demento explains how many different things can make for a poor decision as well as how to avoid these decisions.

To answer your last letter, I want to give a few definitions. I know the difference between decision and decision-making, but I also know how many other behaviors go into making a decision as well. We’ll break them down.

Let’s go first with the “decision” part first. What are we deciding about? Decision-making involves weighing all the evidence.

But the difference with decision is we’re making something and we are judging it for itself. We need to make an informed decision. An intelligent decision is not based on a gut gut feeling, but on an evidence-based approach.

Let’s say we don’t like this apple. It has been a disaster. If I didn’t buy the apple, I’d be in trouble. So I have an informed choice. How do I decide?

If it’s good and it’s good right now, there is no reason not to buy it. If I don’t like it, if I don’t believe it should be there, well then we don’t go to the store and pick it up. It doesn’t make us worse off. We don’t ruin our credit score. We don’t go into debt. All of that becomes worse if we don’t. Or if I didn’t.

We make decisions by weighing what makes us feel good with what helps us get along with others the best. It’s not about what we believe or don’t. There are different types of decision making. For example, we decide what to do in a situation by what could happen and how people would react to it.

Another example would be our decision in deciding to send a friend to college
