I always love hearing how others have tried their hand at writing, as well as reading the comments and stories from writers who are just as passionate about their craft as any of us are.

Yesterday there were two new writers in this category at #2. One of them, Jason DeFoe, took inspiration from the late, great Stephen King, while the other, Mark Bresnahan, is so good, that you’d be hard-pressed to even notice it had a King influence.

So, which one should be your next go-to? Here’s your list of recommended books of 2014!

5. Stephen King: Back From the Dead

A very unusual book to put top five, but for me, it was definitely a great read. So good, that I was convinced it was worth re-listening to my entire King backlog, if only for the stories. It’s very dark, and the characters are both intriguing and frightening.

4. The Girl Who Played With Fire

This, by the way, is one of my favorite movies of all time. I’ve been reading a lot of the Stephen King’s earlier works, but if you were to just pick him out as a movie star… you’d be amazed. I wouldn’t blame you.

3. The Name of the Wind

George Washington - George Washington Video - George Washington ...
This is a very good novel, and I don’t think it deserves to be on this list. I enjoyed reading it, mostly because of how dark and dark this book is. A truly dark one, with some fantastic scenes of violence.

2. The Shining

I absolutely love this book, and as a reader who doesn’t even know about this book, I wanted so badly to check it out when I was looking for good Stephen King-related books. And it’s so, so good. It’s a thriller as well as a horror novel, but it really works on three levels.
