It’s probably Kendrick Lamar. No one else has the same level of ambition or creativity as him. The music has been so powerful and the sound is unique, that’s how he does it. That’s where it’s at. So no, I would definitely put it in the top category.
The hard part for me was deciding which song. I was like, “Okay, we’re gonna do six, so the first song would be like, ‘Momma Like A Star,’ but we only got five minutes so we were like, ‘Well, what about another one?’ I’m like, ‘Let’s do another one in Spanish; give us a song in both languages; they both have very strong cultural ties and they speak the same language,’ so we just had a bunch of different songs we were playing. I think that, to me, is like, the greatest moment. And from there we kept going through, like, the whole album without a break. They’re all so good. So I couldn’t say, like, ‘Oh it’s a short song.’ I had to make them feel like they were like long songs in the first place.
Is the whole process more fun than doing your rap in front of the audience?
Yeah. I think that it’s the fun part. Like when you rap something out and then people hear them they’re so blown away. When it’s a big moment in your life and you’re not worried about, like, how many views I have online, or what’s on the internet. It’s like a celebration that makes you feel like you’re making the right decision. It’s all fun.
What do you love about the album?
It’s very personal to me. When I hear it—and I mean no disrespect to any of the artists on the album; they’re all good music— I listen to the original version and I listen to the new version and I listen to everything the second time around and I’m like, ‘I don’t even like this thing now, what the fuck did I learn from it?’ But it’s also a record where I tried to learn as much about love on the record as I can. I don’t really want my music to represent me on a personal level. What I want is for it to be a record that I’m proud of, and I don’t necessarily think I’ve done justice to that on the album. I’m just trying to express myself and I want everybody to
