I would say around 4. To me the length of each bar is very important. As we grow larger, we have more chords to cover in our music making progressions etc. We would like to not end up with something that is really a bunch of chords with the same melody. Also to make sure our chords are not a bunch of notes with the same sound. It would be better to create a structure of 5 or 6 chords.

The first is probably the most straightforward, and the least complicated. This starts with the root, the 3rd of the root. It sounds like this in the song ‘Dawn’:

Notice the note is D. Notice the pattern is not the root, but one chord. Notice also there is a note which is the 3rd but it isn’t an open fifth. Again you have four chords in your progression.

The next chord of the progression starts with the 3rd of the root again in this case this time it’s D. The 3rd of the root also starts with the same note D.

This repeats until the last 4th chord.
5 EF G-E
In this progression the F in the 5th chord is used to add an extra note as opposed to a 5th or even a 2nd. This adds a bit more complexity on top of the root note used in the 1st chord.
5 B (5th) G
The last chord of the progression is just 5 chord (5th), but using the 1st root note again.
5 E (5th) F# (5th)
The pattern still repeats and changes on the 9th chord, but it only changes a note or two, but more importantly, we aren’t repeating that note so you can make changes to it, so you can actually get some great improvisation.
9 F+ G-F E F#
This is the same thing, but now there is an extra note added in F# instead of F. This adds to the complexity of the progression.
