For the most part, the game industry is the same now that it was when I saw the first version of this article nearly a decade ago. A couple of things have changed, but the big difference is that while developers have a lot more fun playing games now than a decade ago, they won’t have as much fun making them.
That doesn’t mean the games industry has stopped innovating or expanding its reach into new corners of the world. That might get better as time goes on. But one thing it has always done is make money—and that means a certain amount of churning out games that are really good. Sure, sometimes it takes a while for a game to catch on, but the sooner games that sell out begin playing out, the sooner developers can start making them, too. The process is already in progress with the recent Wii U and PC releases of Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition.
But games like the Wii U’s Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and the PC version of Grand Theft Auto III: Vice City show that a lot of these games that seem a bit stale in comparison today, like Bayonetta, can still be good. They’re still doing something new and interesting, and they have the ability to keep people hanging in the air for long periods of time. That was never easy in the early days of game development at all, no matter how much money anyone made.
It all comes down to a few different factors. First of all is that the Wii U is incredibly popular because of the fact that its controller features two touch-screens, which isn
and means that it can accommodate a lot more players. (Plus, it’s a lot better looking than a Wii U controller, which probably explains why it still sells on Amazon for far less than the original controller.)
