I don’t know anything about DJing. I’ve never been a musician, and I don’t even think I know how to play anything at all.
But I have a friend who just got into it three months ago. She got into it via Reddit and was very intrigued, so we hooked up a week later and started DJing together. And now I’m pretty good at it!
I’d been doing it for like three years before I met her, and she was just sitting there, looking kinda sad. I told her I was pretty good at DJing, and she was like, “What the hell are you talking about?” and I was like, “Well, I guess we’re pretty good.” And then five minutes later, this girl showed up and we did this DJ thing for a little while! Like, I was like, “Yeah, I guess we’re pretty good.” And we were like, “We should have a dance party!”
If she had given me the name of a dance party or a group of people who would just show up and dance, I would have been right there, too. I mean I’d rather do a club than a dance party.
How do I make these things come together? How do I get into this whole thing?
That’s really tough! (laughing)
I guess you have to do something a little bit different for each of those things. (I just started doing it a few evenings per week about three months ago, which has been a blast.) Once you set out to do something, there’s no way to stop, so you have to just figure out the best way to get through it. Especially with the social networking aspect of it.
You don’t want to look like a loser with a bunch of people looking at you on the Internet. You want to look cool, and you want to look like an expert at what you’re doing, so you should never really leave it too late, or you’re not going to be in shape by the time people show up. You don’t want to look like you lost your marbles at the end of the day because people are still making fun of you.
A lot of the most creative, successful people I know are also really frugal. They don’t get so freaked out about what anyone else does that they start getting all these crazy ideas and they’re like, “What did I do wrong this time? I shouldn’t
