A: I don’t think so. I’ll have fun learning by myself. The lesson I learned in the beginning is that it’s really important to know what you want to play (or at least get a rough idea of it), so that you can pick and choose the right exercises or exercises which best suit your individual playing skills. To learn something by yourself is much easier than learning it by another guitarist. This is why it’s great to try playing along to recordings and by yourself. Once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty much inevitable that you will want to record something on your own.
Q: If you had the choice between learning in a studio, or by playing on your own, which one would you choose?
A: I would probably pick and choose between two or three of the other guitarists in my band. But then I wouldn’t play in the studio. That would be a terrible idea, because then I wouldn’t be learning.
Q: Do you know any players who are not necessarily experienced at playing guitar?
A: It depends which players I would rather work with. If one is a really good player, I’m not going to work with that person. I will try to work with the other guitarist. Sometimes a good guitar player will work with someone who is totally not good but still talented.
Q: What are some things you think people get wrong about guitar playing?
A: People think that only the professional guitar player has any interest in learning how to play a song. This is ridiculous – guitar music is a very varied and creative field, and in the beginning, if the person is really talented, it’s a bit frightening to learn the fundamentals because it can become very hard to remember the details. But once you get that part, then you can start to play anything, no problem… and you don’t even need to know any instruments at this time.
Q: The song “Rock the Garden” is a classic of rock songs. What is your favorite part? (Note: I’m not playing around.)
A: I have to say that I think it’s one of my all time favorite songs. I’ve played the whole song live several times and it’s just amazing how a song like this really has to be done right! The lyrics are very clear – it’s just amazing on the guitar.
