Dale: I think there’s a lot of room, especially right after high school. And I feel in my 20s, you can pick up anything you need to know and you can learn what you need to learn. I think that’s important because you can never learn everything. It’s tough because you’re always moving forward. If you don’t take advantage of that and learn things that you can learn to improve, then you’ll never develop. I think that’s something I’ve learned the hard way. I had the ability and I had the drive, but I had no one to teach me and my band was kind of the one thing I had to really learn.
Can you tell me the first time you took a lesson at a guitar center?
Dale: That is a good question! [Laughs] I remember when my mom and dad let me go to school on a Tuesday and we got tickets for a school show that night. We came in on a Wednesday and they went, “We want to meet you at noon.” My dad said, “I want to be with you at noon.” My mom said, “Don’t be a girl, you can wait.” So we went up, and the teacher came up to me and put his hands on my hips and said, “Are you going to play on stage?” And I said, “I’m going to play. Do you want to come up to me and see me play?” His eyes lit up with that energy, so obviously, I’m not shy. At all.
Do you know how long that lasted for?
Dale: I don’t. But I think my parents were trying to figure out what were we going to do with our lives when we grew up and they said, “Do you want to study music?” It was a really hard decision for him and I had to figure out how to handle that because he’s already doing pretty well. When I was a kid, I wanted to be in a rock band and I wanted to play in the army. And this was more than one. That was my goal at a young age. That whole decision to study music to be a better musician was a lot of fun and I’m kind of glad I’ve lived my life that way because now I know for sure that it worked out. I have no regrets and I’m glad it did.
It sure was hard getting through the second year. What was that first semester like?
