The story of how our planet lost its cooling influence in the last century has come to an end, according to a study co-authored by the world’s largest ocean basin.
In his recent work for the journal Nature Climate Change, Dr. Michael Mann reports that Earth’s temperature has begun to stabilize. In contrast to the prevailing conclusion that “global warming is a fad,” Mann points out that the world has avoided a major warming, and instead observed one cool period, the Little Ice Age in the mid-12th century.
Mann, a geophysicist at Penn State University, and his co-author, climatologist Professor Michael B. Schmidt, conclude that there has never been a stronger temperature gradient between the upper and lower troposphere, or the lower portion of the atmosphere where temperatures are usually measured.
In a recent discussion, the authors note that they have seen only one previous “pause in warming,” which coincided with the mid-19th century cooling that lasted eight years.
Mann, who is an author of the paper with Schmidt, also points out that there never have been any cooling in the lower troposphere, which is typically considered to be the climate system’s thermostat.
“For a period of time in the past, there has been warming everywhere except the lower troposphere,” said Mann, a professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State. “But that period of time has also coincided with dramatic cooling, because most of the warming happened in the lower troposphere. This finding suggests that global temperatures today have always been lower by this measure.”
