You see a couple of problems: The flapper dress is an old American style, and very early in its development the French were trying to imitate it. I like the fact that when it became popular, it really didn’t take off in a great way. It began its fall from grace in New Orleans, and it went straight into the dustbin of history.
In the case of the flapper dress, does that say something about women who actually wore it?
This is a question of semantics. It is certainly true that the name “flapper dress” was associated with the people who dressed up as girls. That means that the flapper dress actually has its roots in European flapper dress. At the very beginning of the 19th century, one of the most fashionable and popular forms of flapper dress was actually called “née flageole” or “Née lancet,” or “Nella skirt.”
That’s interesting because it appears that people in New Orleans in the 18th century weren’t particularly interested in traditional feminine garments. They wanted a bit more sexual appeal, and the most attractive option is a skirt. You had high heels or some dress that allowed some sort of flexibility. And it could have been that the whole idea of the flapper dress was to give women that ability to show off their bodies and have some fun. It was more of a costume than it was a dress, and people made a big fuss about it.
But what you don’t hear much about is the fact that it was not a particularly well-made flapper dress. Most of us have a pretty good idea what our grandmothers’ grandmothers wore to church.
