I am sooooo thankful for Santa’s generosity. My secret Santa got me two books. Two volumes of a fantastic book about the history of science, called “Science and the Origins of Life: The Rise of a Scientific Revolution” (available in the States through Amazon). They also sent me two copies of my favorite book, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. Thanks Santa
In the late 1950s, two American scientists at Columbia University in New York City published a series of papers that challenged conventional wisdom that life would last more than 500 million years — more than half the age of the universe.
In the first paper, the two scientists, Ronald Laughlin and John Woinarski, calculated the age of the universe and concluded that the cosmos has existed for 13.8 billion years, or 4.5 billion years after the Big Bang. Their conclusion: the universe is young.
Their second paper, published in Nature in 1959, offered a much more conservative estimate of the age of the universe: that it was perhaps 7-12 billion years old at most. That paper was the beginning of the “Cogliostro dilemma,” which holds that the universe must be younger than what we think it is.
But the age of the universe wasn’t an issue in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The stars, which astronomers had discovered with tremendous precision and precision at a wavelength that spans billions of light-years — the “hot Jupiters,” as the stars were then known — were believed to be thousands of billions of years old. They gave astronomers an idea of the universe’s age, but were unlikely
