Men wore what they felt was the best-fitting men’s garments. They had a wide range of styles from the basics to more extravagant designs. These garments are often described by the fashion and fashion historian Edward Duchamp as “art”, in contrast to the more conventional designs by designer Alexander McQueen.
A man’s shirt is an integral part of his attire for a variety of reasons. If he is shopping for a new suit, his shirt must be both stylish and function. This requires a strong, light fabric as this is the primary structural structure of a garment. However, men also need a shirt to make up his body, and this is something that is made up of many layers.
Why has clothing in this period been so variable from man to man?
Many theories have been put forward about the differences between men of that time and modern day, however it’s important to bear in mind that none of these theories are infallible. The clothes from the 1920s and 1930s were all made by men and were tailored to fit their bodies, but these same men would have looked as different to modern day men as women and babies may look different to their parents in different clothing. So while the clothes they wore in the 1920s may have been the same as what they would wear today, modern day men and women may not wear the exact same clothes as their grandparents and aunts wore and so on.
It may seem that the clothing worn by men in the 1920s was more like that of women and children today, but it wasn’t always this way. There are differences between the male clothes of this era and that of today in terms of the materials used, the shapes and styles of clothes, the overall construction of a shirt, and the level of care required when wearing clothes.
