It is most often a form of jazz. Many famous contralto artists — including Glenn Miller, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Ray Charles — began their careers solo, and many remain solo today.
So does it help to have an acoustic vocalist in your group? Well, the good news, says Dr. Charles McAllister, is that a certain percentage of singers do, indeed have an acoustic, and the other 90 percent are more likely to have a singing voice alone.
“A singer in a band is likely to have a singing voice alone,” says Dr. McAllister. “But that’s not always the case.”
The good news is that many singers have the luxury of being able to do both singing and singing alone. The bad news is that the singing, the singing alone is not always easy, because it has to be in tune.
While they share the same body in front of an organ — or a stage — there really is only one singer in a group. In a solo, however, the singers’ voices are in tune (and if they’re in sync, there’s lots of singing) so they can also do both singing and singing alone.
“You can’t sing alone from a musical perspective, because the musicians are playing the chords, you’re singing the lyrics, and it’s not really you in tune trying to sing the melody,” says Dr. McAllister.
“You’re singing the melody but just for a few beats. And then you have no melody.”
For some, one voice can really help a duo’s voice. For others, more than one can be a challenge.
“People often compare solo singers to gospel singers and the way they say things sometimes is a little bit off,” says Dr. McAllister. “I’m a gospel singer, I talk a lot. … I’m just different.” Plus, Dr. McAllister says, there are also several things you can do to help soloists sing, from playing the notes to working with the microphone.
For example, in “Ebony,” the violinists had to play with the microphone.
“I would sing to that,” says Dr. McAllister. “I played with the mic and I tried playing the chords. It doesn’t really matter unless they know how to do it.”
