In the 1950s, American flappers were often seen sporting the long blonde curls and short waist that have made her the epitome of the modern glamour queen. Some flappers, however, were much more modest.

Some were quite tall while others may have had rather skinny legs and arms.

The most famous flapper of all time was a woman from Louisiana named Betsey Hall from 1915. According to legend, Betsey was born Betsey “Betty” Smith in 1885 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was in her thirties at the time and the baby was a boy named Edward Hall.

Bettie and her husband, James “Doc” Hall, were originally from Tennessee. However, when they first began to travel to the rest of the world in the late 20th century, the family relocated to New Orleans. Betsey had a son named Edward and a daughter named Elizabeth. Betsey died in New Orleans in 1943. She was buried at the St. Thomas Infirmary.

In 1959, Betsey’s ex-husband, James Hall came to collect on the late Betsey’s estate. Doc Hall then turned over his sister. A few weeks later, she met a young man. He was named Fred Hays and she went with him to New Orleans where they found work in bars and restaurants. During their stay in the city, Doc and his sister began a courtship.

Betty returned to New Orleans and married Richard Hays sometime in 1959. They were living in the famous French Quarter in the late 1960s and early 1970s and became engaged, but the marriage never reached fruition.

The following year, in 1977, Betsey Hall died of a heart attack at the age of 64.

One flapper named Lillie Mae Tippets decided to pay tribute to the beauty of her “flapper” namesake.

Tippets was a flapper who began her career at just thirteen years old. Around the time she turned seventeen, she went to the barbershop across the alley from her home on New Orleans’ southern edge to seek some trimming. As she pulled the hair from her body, she noticed that the barber was also flapping his long silver wings.
