These were worn, for sure, for running. They were probably the same as the ones on display in the Smithsonian today.
Is there a lot of evidence of the shoes you were shown here?
Yes, quite a lot. At first, we thought only that the shoes were in the Smithsonian Museum. We found an entire shoe section, almost the entire collection, just underneath the shoes section. But then, we could see that we also had the entire collection of shoes that were made for walking. It was quite a lot. It was pretty amazing. So, we are really proud to be able to do this in the Smithsonian. This was originally a local collection donated by a couple of local students.
For the first year, we had a large number of volunteers and students go through this collection. But there are many, many things we never even imagined we would see.
Why is walking so important?
It’s the most natural activity we know, and it can be dangerous if you don’t have a plan. Because walking is easy, it’s the most natural activity to have, it’s the most basic form of exercise for humans. All of our physical systems are geared toward walking. But for most of the history of mankind, it wasn’t a viable option except for the poor and the very young.
How can we help prevent these deaths?
The good news is that we’ve been able to find a way to develop a method of removing these shoes from people in developing countries, so they can walk out in the streets in these shoes instead of the shoes on display.
Why do so many people don’t walk properly?
A lot of it is simply a matter of our physical form. We are short, weak, and overweight. So, walking is just a much healthier activity than running, and it’s much easier on your feet compared to running.
What are the best ways to improve your standing in these shoes?
Take extra time. Stand with your feet off the ground when you walk down the street. We have seen many instances where they would just walk on.
Take steps in a regular pace. If you were walking up a hill, if you were walking at a regular pace, then when those steps come in contact with the floor of the shoe, they go straight through the shoe and the shoe doesn’t move. That keeps things on track.
