What kind of dresses? What did the people do with their hair? What did the flappers wear in the evenings? A lot of people had an enormous amount of time before being arrested. They were trying to figure out what they were wearing when they would be arrested. So I think we had quite a broad and open view of a lot of stuff, and so we decided early on to not look at these cases that are very sensational and they have a lot of emotion attached to them.”
What did they have in common other than the arrests they were committing?
One of the things we would do was to go in to a place and see what the people they were committing were doing in their leisure time. They were probably trying to find a place to live, the things they were working on. They were probably trying to get some food. They were certainly working in industries where there was a surplus of workers or there might be a shortage of workers. The more they did that, the more people we had a really broad view of the world they were going to have.
I wanted to ask you a few questions about the arrests and what they meant to those involved. Let’s start with a couple of the key players. How did they get to your office? What was it like to be on the other side of the arrest from a few yards away?
That is one of the things we didn’t have in a way. We only had a tiny team of photographers, we didn’t have much time; we had enough to make sure that the police were not breaking into offices. The police officers and everyone else was there to protect people and protect property. When we were there, there were some people involved in the case that were being transferred from one district to another, to keep the people safe.
But the arrest would be going on from one department to another. And often their phone would be switched off. If there was a disturbance, so many people might have an idea of the people involved. Sometimes the people themselves would know the people involved, so we were able to take pictures of people who were taking pictures of people in handcuffs. Some of these were quite close-up. Some of the photographs were taken without a tripod, so we were able to make out the people’s faces, and what they were doing.
