“That, my friends will never know!” said the artist. “In the world of flappers, a great dress could be something like the following”: a tight-fitting, wide-waisted, low-necked skirt; a low waist (not to be confused with the waist in many American-style trousers). A pair of loose-fitting, flat-fronted dresses, or corset slacks, could be worn. “You could wear one of those,” said the artist, “and it would be no different than, say, a pair of shorts from the late ’70s. You could even have it as a skirt with the waist up towards the hip – that is, the same as the skirt in the mid-1970s. There were very few trousers designed in the late ’70s – they certainly weren’t in women’s sizes. That really took back the style. It’s one of the things that flappers and those of us who live long enough know.” As with the ’70s, the style of the ’80s was in fact more conservative. At that time, the look was more elegant. It’s still popular today.
I had to ask the artist if you could make any of his designs and see if he could remember the name of the dress.
“If it’s a costume,” he said, “then I might know what dress size and fabric it is. I can’t tell you what he wore. I’d really love to know what he was wearing – especially if the person is still alive today.”
So it sounds like if you see a dead person wearing these types of clothes and they have a lot of tattoos, then you’re probably not too far off!
“No I’m afraid not,” said the artist. “As we know, dead people still live. I’m sure some old friends of ours will tell you about them wearing those old fashioned clothes.”
I think I’ll keep trying, but we’re not sure if we’ll get a real answer from the artist. So we’ll just have to keep calling, trying to get more information from him.
In any case, we’re glad they’re out there. If you think we missed something, let us know!
The federal Department of Homeland Security has approved a plan that should provide some relief – albeit limited – to the thousands of unauthorized immigrants who have lived in the shadows in the U.S. for years.
